LoRaWAN and NB-IoT

Reindeer trackingon tworadio networks

LoRaWAN reaches far on very little power, NB-IoT rides on the mobile network. Porokartta brings the positions from both onto one map — in the browser and on the phone, with alerts and offline maps.

Why Porokartta

  • Real-time tracking

See where your devices are on the map, wherever you are.

  • More efficient herding

Less driving out in the terrain, more time for the work itself.

  • Built for the North

Designed for long distances and demanding conditions.

  • In the field without a network

Downloaded maps keep working even with no connection.

Everything essential in one view

See your devices on one map

Follow your reindeer on the map — in the browser and in the mobile app. Filter, view groups, and see what matters at a glance.

  • Search

Find a device by name, EUI code, or customer name. Map points are searchable too.

  • Groups

Share reindeer within a group using a share code, and choose whose reindeer appear on your map.

  • Base stations

See base station status: how many are online and when they were last seen.

  • Filters

Narrow the view by position age, category, device type, or handling state.

  • Live location

Follow device movement in real time and share your own position with the group.

  • History

Play back a device's route and see when it arrived at a given area.

Base stations and coverage

The base station network in the field

Devices send their position through LoRaWAN base stations. If a base station goes offline, devices near it may stop updating until it recovers. The app shows this directly.

  • Wide base station network

    Coverage across Finland.

  • Works on the fells too

    Dependable connection in remote areas.

  • A network still growing

Better coverage as the network develops.

Modern technology

LoRaWAN + NB-IoT

The devices use two different radio technologies. LoRaWAN reaches far on very little power; NB-IoT relies on the mobile network. Together they cover situations where either alone would not.

LoRaWAN

  • Long range
  • Very low power consumption
  • Works in remote areas

NB-IoT

  • Broad coverage
  • Reliable connection
  • Works in demanding conditions too

Illustrative distribution

Most active areas

The distribution is computed in the browser.

Share of observations · Last 30 days · relative to the busiest

Motion is disabled in the operating system settings. The map shows the distribution without animation.

An illustration: it shows which areas would show activity, not live device or coverage data.

The important data, always with you

The right information at the right time

Porokartta helps you make better decisions — in the field and beyond it.

    • Alerts

Inactivity, GPS failure, leaving an area, and device-specific tilt and tampering.

    • Battery estimate

See the remaining charge and an estimate of operating time.

    • Temperature

Follow the temperature around the device.

    • Signal

Check connection quality and when the device was last heard.

    • Offline use

Download a map area in advance and use it with no network connection.

    • Map points

Mark important places on the map and share them with your group.

    • Areas

Draw up to 10 areas and get an alert when a device leaves all of them.

    • Live location

Share your position with the group. Background sharing runs for up to 4 hours.
